The first kind of equality you're referring to is civil equality. It is not a natural equality, it is artificial, invented by our culture. I also think it's a good thing, and worth protecting.
We may not be able to achieve social equality, but we can ensure that everybody has an opportunity to seek their own version of the good life. We can remove some of the roadblocks that social inequality places in their way.

I'm just saying I don't think natural equality exists. Naturally, we are very unequal. We are born to different environments, we receive different educations, we have different physical abilities, different intellectual abilities, different talents.
We invent equality because we have a basic sense of fairness. Civil equality is a choice we've made to treat everyone as equals, regardless of their natural advantages or disadvantages.
It's a powerful idea. It's a good idea.

It's an idea I'm supporting.
Again, thank you for the comments. Much appreciated.

And for those who fail to rise on their merits, we can provide a social safety net for them, so their failure doesn't have to mean total destitution.
That doesn't make them socially equal with successful people by any means, but the safety net can still be "equal" in that we all have equal access to it if we need it.

That's some great insight. Thank you for your comments,
If I may ask, what do you mean when you say, natural equality?
