The Jolson Story is a 1946 musical biography which purports to tell the life story of singer Al Jolson. It stars Larry Parks as Jolson, Evelyn Keyes as "Julie Benson" (approximating Jolson's wife, Ruby Keeler), William Demarest as his manager, Ludwig Donath and Tamara Shayne as his parents, and Scotty Beckett as the young Jolson.

  • Great movie.Larry Parks did an exellent acting job. Along with Al Jolson's singing it was great. Larry Parks was robbed of the Oscar.

  • I've loved Jolson for years and this is one of the best movies ever made in my opinion ... and the same goes for "Jolson Sings Again" too!!!! :o)

  • Dear Aamberleaf,

You're right..Poor Mr.Parks was cheated out of an Oscar for Best Actor for

    this film.

  • It is Rudy Wissler who passed away recently.

  • @rubyrola1959 I think that is Rudy Wissler, though at the time, I think the folks who did the singing were not identified so sadly I think he didn't likely get the credit he deserved at that early point in his career.

  • @JohnnyGNV i believe that is Rudy Wissler. could be wrong but i'm very positive that's who it is. Cheers!

  • JOLSON was a great in show-biz...pre Crosby...pre Sinatra..they all learned from him...we should do the same...

  • Does anyone know who sang for young Scotty Beckett? Surely it's a studio vocalist

doing the singing for him ~ Scotty Beckett was a fine young actor but I'm certain it's

    not him singing.

  • this is a great movie about a great singer and I'm glad to read some post from younger people who enjoy such a great talent from many years ago,and as was said jolson sings again is just as great,I wasn't born myself when these movies were made but still love them just the same.I am lucky to have both movies on dvd.thanks for the post anyway,it gives younger people a chance to see such great singing and good movies.

  • @dotmacis

Tell your ex that he is WRONG and you are right. Many years ago I worked at Camarillo Developmental Center in the geriatric ward where we had a patient who did makeup for all the old stars of that time. She was there and

told me that story about Jolson standing in for Parks.

  • I just finished watching the Jolson Story and Jolson Sings again. They did a double feature on the "Antenna TV" channel. I know I saw both these movies when I was a kid but I never expected to enjoy them as much as I did just now. I kind of got a crush on Larry Parks. He was so good in the role that now I'm interested in the guy the movie was about so off I go to do a youtube search and see if I can find anything by Al Jolson.

  • I'm 19 and adore this film! Damn McCarthyism ruined Parks' career but he is amazing in the Jolson films
