Yes, it was an area that had been reserved for families - the tumbling plane smashed into an ice-cream truck where they were queuing.
There are pictures online from PAris-Match magazine showing the immediate aftermath. Not for the squeamish.
Also, another tragedy of that day was the slow and mixed-up response to getting the injured to flown to treatment. The report made a lot of that issue, with recommendations to ensure that didn't get fucked up again.

@calou1966 Dangerous yes, but statisticly, you're in 100 times more danger driving home afterwards, than you are getting killed at an airshow. It's not a waste. Believe it or not, it is a BIG recruitment tool for the USAF and the Navy. Hands-on, and real. Inspires the future pilots of this country, and many others. Many see it as a necessity. I respect your opinion. Safety needs improvement, of course, but don't cancel them! Millions love them.

it was a catastrophe.
the airplane goes down right to this crowd.a lot of family's with children there at this day.
