In his recent visit to Pakistan, Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Mark Grossman said that the US wants to maintain good relations with Pakistan going forward. Defense Analyst Ikram Sehgal said Ambassador Grossman's trip was intended to smooth relations between the two countries in the short run, but in the long run problems will linger. Hightened tensions between the two countries have led policy makers in the US wondering how to change Pakistsan's policies towards Afghanistan. Caroline Wadhams of the Center for American Progresssaid the United States needs to stay engaged with Pakistan, and be more accepting of its security concerns. Brian Katulis of the Center for American Progress said that though two countries might have diplomatic tensions, their core interests make them dependent on each other. Analysts said it remains to be seen whether Grossman's visit can help repair tensions, or if events in region will overtake such efforts.
