Just two weeks after Jeff Hardy wrapped up his final dates with WWE after receiving a sustained main event push for the better part of the last year, the Charismatic Enigma was arrested Friday on a host of drug charges, including accusations that he possessed and trafficked large quantities of drugs including anabolic steroids cocaine, law enforcement officials have said.

Here is the press release put out by the office of the Moore County, SC sheriff:

Sheriff Lane Carter reports the arrest of an individual on charges of trafficking in controlled prescription pills, and possession of anabolic steroids. Sheriff Carter reported a joint investigation conducted by officers from the Moore County Sheriffs Office Narcotics Unit, Moore County Sheriffs Office Select Enforcement Unit, and Fayetteville Police Department led to the arrest. Officers executed a search warrant at a residence located at 265 Boys Camp Road near Cameron, North Carolina.

During the search officers located and seized approximately 262 Vicodin prescription pills, 180 Soma prescription pills ( Somas are non-controlled prescription pills), 555 milliliters of anabolic steroids, a residual amount of powder cocaine, and items of drug paraphernalia. Vicodin and anabolic steroids are included in Schedule III within the North Carolina Controlled Substances Act. The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $2,500.00.

Im sure nobody in WWE, nor anyone who knows and cares about Jeff Hardy, could be happy about this news. But you have to think there are some people in the WWE front office wiping their brow and letting out a sigh of relief over the fact that Hardy no longer works for the company.

But while WWE officials may feel they dodged a bullet, the reality is that, whatever Hardy had been up to since his recent WWE departure was almost certainly also going on when he was with the company. That does not speak well of WWEs wellness policy, which has already been riddled with holes over the years.

Whats more, its not like WWE let Hardy go because they were privvy of his extra-curricular activities. On the contrary, Hardy was wearing one of WWE' world titles and was pushed as the top star of the Smackdown brand until the moment he was walked out the door. WWE was doing all it could to keep Hardy in the fold. Most absurdly, the company even had him embroiled in a feud that dealt with his reputation as a drug user and was pushed as the babyface in that program against Punk, who spoke out against Hardys drug use. Hardy was even scripted to brag about the fact that he never went to rehab for his drug problems. I believe him.

And therein may lie the problem. Hardys demons were well known within WWE for years, and were contributed to his first departure from the company back around 2002. After fueling his reputation for partying in TNA, where he was known to no-show important matches, WWE hired him back in late 2006, despite the fact that Hardy never received treatment for his problems.

Months later, he was suspended weeks before he was set to particpate in, and likely win, the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXIV his second strike within the company.

Indeed, our legal system dictates that Hardy is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but its hard to come up with any rational explanation for possessing large quantities of illegal drugs.

Sadly, its possible that Hardys latest run-in with controversy could mark the end of his national wrestling career. Despite his undeniable star power, I cant imagine any major wrestling company getting near Hardy anytime soon. That may be just fine for now with Hardy, who walked away from a big money WWE career last month to pursue other ventures, including a rumored reality show. But one has to think that he would have eventually come looking for his old WWE job again and the seven figure salary that came with it.

Certainly, Hardy is young enough to recover from this latest setback, but it will likely require proving himself to others. That means getting the kind of professional treatment that he has all but scoffed at until now and that WWE has portrayed him as a hero for doing so.

And, sadly, the best place for Hardy to turn his life around may be inside a jail cell.

  • Drugs in wrestling is nothing new, jeff was not the first, he will not be the last, Wrestlers as far back as Superstar Billy graham in the late 1970s had drug problems, think about Jake The Snake, Iron Sheik, Road Warrior Hawk, Chris Benoit, Hulk Hogan... and even Andre the Giant, would drink amounts that could kill a normal size man., Wrestlers like Bruno Sammartino were the last of the drug and steroid free wrestlers. but all this is nothing new, no reason to single out Jeff Hardy
