A C-17 Globemaster III crew from the 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron complete two aerial cargo drop missions. The cargo included vital supplies such as food, water and fuel for troops and villagers in remote locations of Afghanistan.

    Those are JPADS ("Joint Precision Airdrop System") self targeting parachutes (steerable canopies linked to servo boxes). The canister is a radiosonde that provides winds aloft data to help the system set up and guide the drop. Their 80% drop accuracy is supposed to be (variously) 150 m from 24,500' and 8 km away depending on size and weight variation.
