Since Saturday the 7th of February when the Victorian bushfire crisis started up until first of March 2009, we have had a total of 105 chaplains involved from most states in Australia. Twenty of those have been from NSW and the ACT. This is the equivalent to 650 personnel days on the field. On average each chaplain has had contact with 23 people per day - which means we have ministered to nearly 15,000 people. Agencies such as the Red Cross and the Victorian Department of Human Services are referring people to us for ministry. Our Chaplaincy Australia chaplains are becoming known right across the fire ground. We had a Senior Sergeant at the Victoria Police say this week, "You Chaplaincy Australia guys are everywhere. We've heard such good reports about your care for the victims and many of our officers have appreciated your concern for them. Keep doing a great job." Our full time job is to release 5 full time chaplains to support communities over next 12 -18 months. We estimate that the long term chaplaincy response is going to cost a minimum of $500,000.
