40 124 on the 17.10 York - Manchester in June 1983 at York, Leeds, and Man Vic.

My first attempt at uploading some of mine and my dad's archive 40 footage from 1983 onwards. At the moment I can only do 5 minute unedited chunks, so ignore the 31/4 at the start!

  • A shame to think that the Loco is long dead, I think?

They were my favourate loco when I was 14, somebody told me there were non left on BR and I realised why I had never seen one! bah!

  • The loco is indeed long dead, however there is one left running on the mainline, go to the cfps website for further info.

  • We tried our best but unfortunately lost. It was fun trying though!

  • What crap they now have on this service now horrible class 185 that can bounce just as badly as the 142 pacers. I was never a fan of the class 158 either. Where have most of the loco hauled trains gone to now??? The DMU are generally noiser for the passengers.

  • nice1!!!! thanks a lot! this is really great to see some old footage but also makes me quite sad just how the railway has been ruined since then. now days it is boring. BR blue those were the days!! i hope you upload more because this is really intresting. thanks again

  • These boxes of shit were singularly responsible for the early withdrawal of the Stanier pacifics. I know which I would rather have over Shap and Beattock.

  • @4SRKT What version of top trumps did mummy give you for your birthday?

  • What memories, miss the class 40's, lost alot of interest today in railways, just full of emu's/dmu's. bring back loco hauled trains.

  • Love these old clipsbrings back a lot of memories of York and seeing those people on the platform waving stuff away. Did prefer that old layout though especially the two centre roads.

  • does lack run round ability though I take your points about rationalization , sometimes over rationalization / doing things on the cheap can backfire which means fines in this blame culture / fragmentized /dysfunctional railway .

A lot of cost cutting on the ECML , notorious for pylons and wires coming down

  • At least York is still a good station today and every rail enthusiasts favorite i imagine.

  • I'd be the first to agree York was much more interesting with the old layout and old trains, but the railways had to move with the times. York would have been horrendous to resignal and electrify had the old layout (which dated in essence from the victorian era) been kept. With the decline of loco hauled trains there was no longer a need to keep the centre roads, sidings etc. However I believe one of the lines from Holgate Jn is to be reinstated soon, making the approach 4 track insteads of 3.

  • Hmmm - Why don't you race a class 31 against a class 45 or a 47 (both with almost twice the power of the 31) and see if the 31 beats it?

  • Indeed it did. What a treasure trove of images in this vid. York station as was before someone wrecked it. A HST in platform 10 on a Kings Cross stopper. The thrill of a class 40 on a passenger train: how excited are those bashers?

What's with the 31 on the Mk II d/e/f stock? What's that working? 31/4s were commonplace in York at that time, but not on NESW workings. Still even a 31/4 beats a 45/1 or a 47/4.

  • the cheap electric remodelling they did of york absolutely killed it.
