India's Ruling Congress Alliance Wins Election

The hot line is ringing!

*Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's ruling coalition won an overwhelming election victory, boosting hopes of a stable government as the emerging Asian power faces economic downturn and tensions with Pakistan. The victory over the opposition Hindu-nationalist-led alliance means the left-of-center Congress may find it easier to form a stable coalition with smaller parties and be less vulnerable to pressure on issues like economic reforms. Congress party president Sonia Gandhi pushed her son to the fore in this election, putting his face at the center of posters and billboards. Congress party supporters carrying banners of star campaigners Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, set off firecrackers in celebration on the party's return to power. Gandhi should be in the cabinet, but I will have to persuade him, Singh said in New Delhi after declaring victory. Rahul Gandhi may join the cabinet, though he hasnt responded directly to Singhs election-night call for him to become a minister.
