Stritch performed it as if she was picking up the pieces of her grief, and is not bitter about her loss, because it seems that she thinks it's part of life. Arthur performed it with patience and conviction, quite similar to Stritch's in terms of contentment but quite special. Loudon's was highly emotional and passionate, and it seems to satisfy her. I think that they are all great in their very own unique ways.

I just listened to Bea Arthur's version, but this version is hands down far and away the better of the two. Elaine Stritch sings from such a natural place, as though the words are just occurring to her, a consistent aspect she brings to the table whenever she is performing. I don't think that quality can be taught.

Helen Reddy has recorded a beautiful version of this as well. On her "Center Stage" album.

Fantastic performance. A new song for me, but, as always, Ms. Stritch does it so well.
You MUST check-out Dorothy Loudon's version of this song. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it
