Children should be seen and not heard...but who says? A Philosophy academic is challenging the old adage by teaching primary school children to argue and to think for themselves.

For the past three years Dr Andrew Fisher —an academic in the Department of Philosophy at The University of Nottingham — has run Philosophy clubs in primary schools in the Bilborough area of the city, with the aim of raising their aspirations and self-belief.

In this video Dr Fisher and the children explain what they get out of the programme.

  • Thanks for the kind comments, I'm glad you liked it. I totally agree that this 'sharing of ideas', and 'trying out their ideas' should be central to any education at any level. We need to help people think for themselves.

I'm more than happy to chat to your friend about any aspect of this. andrew.fisher@nottingham.ac.uk

  • lol vicky i am prab

  • Nice one Andy.

  • Great to see kids getting a chance to think for themselves and also the key phrase that resonates from amongst these children is "sharing my ideas". This club clearly gives both the opportubity and a suitable environment in which they enjoy and feel comfortable doing that.

It is one aspect which needs become more central within education as a whole.

    Good job Dr Fisher!

Btw I know a friend who is about to start her phd in poltical philosophy who is interested in this very idea. Put in touch?
