"When I Was King Of Bath" from 'Monsieur Beaucaire' (A Romantic Opera by Andre Messager).
Ernest Pike (Tenor) with chorus (Bessie Jones, Edward Halland & Nellie Walker) and orchestra conducted by Arthur Wood.
Recorded, 27th May, 1919. Issued August 1919, withdrawn from cat. Dec. 1921.
I have many 78's from the 1910's period but I have not uploaded many at all in the main because I am a 1920's / 1930's- a- holic. This record turned up in a box of 78's some months back and it grew on me.
I was already familiar with 'the incidental music from Monsieur Beaucaire' twenty years ago when i obtained a record of this lovely music by the H.M Coldstream Guards Band It made an instant impression and that old 12" 78 is still one of my sentimental prized favourites.
Ernest Pike was a prolific recorder. His duets, notably with his contemporary Peter Dawson are worthy of note. This is a 90 year old record, there will be nobody left alive now who saw this light opera in 1919, let this song live again in 2009 - enjoy!.
I would advise listeners interested in this Operetta to look it up on the net as there seems to be plenty of info on it.
