Deadly China Mine Blast

CHEN:
A deadly mine blast in northeast China on Thursday. Twenty-seven people are dead with six injured in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Liaoning Province.

STORY:
All the 27 bodies have been found in the mine located in Fuxin. There were 41 miners in the mine at the time of the explosion. Of those, 14 returned to the surface on their own. Six of them were injured and
being treated in a local hospital.

An investigation into the explosion is underway, but a preliminary report shows that the accident was caused by use of explosives in the shaft when workers were blasting to reach deeper coal.

[Di Yingquan, Fuxin Mining Assoc.]:
"This coal mine has all the necessary certificates and licenses, but the blast still happened. It means the intensity of gas, oxygen and fire must have reached a certain level for it to blast. In this sense, this coal
mine must have very serious problems."

Another coal mine gas outburst in southwest China killed ten people and left another eight missing earlier today.

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal and has the world's deadliest mining industry. Nearly 3,800 Chinese coal miners died in gas blasts, flooding and other accidents in 2007.
