Marilyn Horne as Isabella in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri, singing the aria "Pensa alla Patria" from the second act. Douglas Ahlstedt as Lindoro and Allan Monk as Taddeo. Conductor James Levine, Met, 1986
No SofiCentes! I'm in love with Marilyn, I wish she was mine. I'm a tall handsome Black man, I wonder what are the chances? No matter, I love her. I tried to see her each time she came to Chicago.
@baritonebynight Well you are right about True "contraltos" but there are a LOT of "mezzo" out there who are really contraltos.
Do me a favor would you, there is a Master class with Ms. Horne and she works with a baritone (Its just audio) Please listen to it and tell me what you think. I will be waiting to hear your remarks.
@Operaman41 Interesting. I've only sung with one contralto in my life.I know that true contraltos are extremely rare and the classification has to do with where the passagio points occur in the voice vs the range of the voice. There was a very promising young contralto that I saw with Ms Horne's foundation a few years back named Meredith Arwady. I hope she does well. As Ms Horne as their teacher who wouldn't do well!?
@baritonebynight I have several friends who call themselves "mezzo" when they really feel they are "contralto" the reason is they would be stuck with only certain roles if they used the term contralto. One friend started out using the title contralto and she was DENINED roles such as Amneris and Azuchena just because she used that title. She changed it and now gets to do those roles plus La Cieca, Ulrica, Erda.

@baritonebynight I know that! I was just stating that her voice is wonderful and even though alto is not her billing, I still think she is FAB!
