Someone To Watch Over Me (Gershwin/Arr. Joe Turrin)
From "Oh, Kay"
This is a live performance of the Tartini Concerto in D and the Joe Turrin arrangement of the classic Gershwin "Someone To Watch Over Me," given at the 2005 University of Missouri Emerging Artists Showcase Concerto. It was another competition of sorts that I was asked to audition for as the GTA of the trumpet studio.
I apologize for the sound quality compared to most everything else I have posted. This was a concert that I never received the digital recording done by the university, so I had nothing to lay over the inferior video camera audio.
I had performed the Tartini with orchestra as a winner of the WSU Concerto/Aria competition back in undergraduate school, as it's obviously much nicer to perform with orchestra than piano reduction. But I have to say I've always considered myself incredibly lucky to have a mother as gifted as I do to perform with me as long as she has. She did a great job with the piano reduction.
You might hear some interesting ornaments -- I always try and do new and original things when I perform a piece. The end of the second movement was something that I've always kind of "heard" internally, and I always wondered how it would sound if I tried it. Well, I guess I was sufficiently in the mood that evening, and I think it turned out pretty cool!
You'll also hear some bona fide clunkers. If I've said it once, I'll say it again -- I HATE performing (especially concerti) from memory.
