From Boston - Research conducted in mice shows that a diet based on quick-burning carbohydrates can cause fatty liver. In addition to developing the condition where fat accumulates in the liver, mice fed a high-glycemic index diet also had elevated levels of blood fat and body fat. Although the research was conducted in mice, foods with a high-glycemic index (such as white bread and rice) are known to raise blood sugars and may increase fat in the body.

From Houston - Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett appears to be making a spectacular recovery from a c-spine fracture suffered earlier this month. He was transferred to a rehab facility closer to his home and, according to his doctors, may soon be walking again.

From Brussels - New guidelines have been put forth regarding the management of infantile allergy to cow's milk. While breast feeding should be considered, the next best option should be either hydrolyzed or amino-acid based formulas, as opposed to soy-based ones.

And finally, from Toronto - Can Facebook be used as a public health tool? Despite the fact that the Government of Ontario normally blocks its computers from the social networking site, health authorities obtained permission to use Facebook to track down a woman who was exposed to a rabid bat last week. Interestingly, after searching the phone book and using Google were unsuccessful, the woman was contacted within an hour of health authorities searching Facebook.

For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
