Your digestive tract depends on proteins that help you break down your food; these are your digestive enzymes. Digestive enzyme deficiencies are very rare, and if you have one, drinking water can't help. However, water does help you digest your food more efficiently, so it's a good idea to drink plenty.

Enzymes
Your body runs many different chemical reactions, most of which require the action of one or more enzymes in a timely and controlled fashion. Not all enzymes are digestive enzymes; you use enzymes to burn nutrient molecules for energy, for instance, which is not a digestive process. Under normal circumstances, your cells make all the enzymes they need to maintain normal function.

Enzyme Deficiencies
True enzyme deficiencies are quite rare. Deficiencies in enzymes that aren't digestive in function generally lead to very serious metabolic disorders, like phenylketonuria, or PKU. You can't treat these major systemic disorders by drinking water; they require medical treatment, and most can't be treated at all. Digestive enzyme deficiencies are also rare, but they're often less serious than systemic enzyme deficiencies. For instance, lactase deficiency causes mild cramping and gas if you consume dairy, explains MayoClinic.com.
