Instrumentation students at Bellingham Technical College constructed this automated turbocompressor system as a learning tool for PLC control, start-up and shut-down sequencing. The PLC is a Koyo model DL05, with inputs coming from operator controls, oil pressure and level switches, and a Bently-Nevada model 3300 machine health monitor.

  • Genius demo instead of the quite huge turbocompressor system!!!

  • use air pressure to measure oil level is a genius!!

  • Cool project! Yeah, need RPM. You might see 10-20k -- but note that its able to spin 150k rpm and then you can replace that pingpong ball with a 2 pound steel bearing. BTW, if you notice some oil leaking out, it's most likely a too restrictive oil return. Most are very large diameter so the oil can drain easily, 3/4" or more.
