The engine is NOT an International! It is a V-8 555 cu. in. CUMMINS. Commonly known as the "Triple Nickel" Much of the engine was made in England and it generally has a VERY poor reputation as a truck engine....as do several other versions of CUMMINS V-8 engines in trucks. The in-line 6-cylinders are a completly diferent story.
yes they are not the best engines when i did my apprenticship I had to rebuild one of these engines out of a coles crane 40 tonne it lasted two years and then cracked a head and hydraulicd so i rebulit it again and it did the exact same thing on the other head and everything was recond in the end we pissd it off and put a straight 6 turbo isuzu in her
Good memories. Had a 81 model 1950C with the VT190, tandem, 13 sp RR. Very similar note. Tough sound. The 555 wasn't always so reliable though. Had a the nick name 'trouble 5'. Many of them did a powerful job pulling semis up and down with only around 200hp. Turbo one's had about 225. Not much by todays standards. Thanks for the memories.

The words V-8 and Cummins do NOT go together too well in the same sentence.
V-555......V-8-265......V-903

Ahh, the triple-nickel (V555). How's she held up?? Not Cummins best diesel, but all diesel are worth something.
