The Awesome 917 Porsche: Porches Racing

The Awesome Porsche 917.

This was pieced together from dozens of video clips, many of them not having soundtracks or featuring that magnificent engine sound. I used the music and multiple splices of engine audio tracks to give the video continuity. Contrary to some of the posters interpretation, I did not sit around with a pair of tin snips removing the sound of this wonderful car from rare archival footage.

Ferrari, Or Matra Or Alfa could have beat them if they would have had then right support and right factory backup.

Porsche had never won Le Man's, so they pulled out all the stop's to do it.

I think the Ferrari 512 S, & M's STILL SOUND ALOT BETTER THAN THE AIR COOLED 917'S.

Vic Elford drove a 917 long tail in the rain at Le Man's,

said he'd never do it again,

too much power for that light body,

and nervous as heck on the road.

@konigtigertank Plenty of difference between 1100 and 1580, especially when people still persist with claims it was done in race trim. That's almost 500hp difference. The 917 engine was an expanded 908, bored out a bit for CanAm and turbocharged. The original bits were never designed for that much stress.

Not saying you said it to deceive but it's a myth which needs to be laid to rest.

Never produced more than 1100hp in race trim. The crankcase flexed too much. Did 1500 on a test bench and (allegedly) 1400 in qualifying.

Can back this up with references if you want.
