DSAEK or Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty is a partial thickness cornea transplant. In this procedure, only one layer of the cornea, the endothelium, is transplanted into a patient's eye. Sometimes the endothelium can be damaged during surgery or trauma or sometimes the cells of the endothelium die too quickly like in Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy. When the endothelium is damaged the cornea can become cloudy and vision decreases. By replacing the endothelium with a DSAEK this problem can be prevented. If a patient with Fuch's Dystrophy needs cataract surgery, a DSAEK can be combined with the cataract removal to prevent the cornea from becoming cloudy.
