As the director of UNC-Chapel Hill's Institute for Marine Sciences, Rick Luettich is an expert on many things coastal, but his deepest area of expertise is hurricanes. He studies storm surge most closely and worries the current category system used to classify hurricanes doesn't adequately warn about the dangers posed by the storms.
