Kim Weston- another one of the best to ever record for Motown (and there never seemed to be a shortage of fine talent at the company.)

Kim Weston possessed a voice that seemed to fit in quite well with the Motown Sound and yet, it also seemed to belong a select group of vocalists who went well beyond soul or pop. Her voice had a character that recalls fine female vocalists such as Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald. Kim could easily switch from jazz, to standards to Motown.

Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland recorded Kim on a number of tracks that were also recorded by others at the company and here they gave her a bittersweet-slice-of-life song, "Any Girl In Love." Many will know this song via the Supremes, so this was a major surprise to learn Kim also recorded it.

Both versions are excellent in their own right; Kim does a magnificent job of really pulling the sorrow out of the lyrics detailing the hurt of loving someone who doesn't return the feeling and even worse, experiencing having that person walk away. Hearing Kim on this is a marvel- note the absolute control she has in her vocals and she and the backing group, The Andantes make for an exciting combination.

Kim Weston is a name and artist everyone would do well to get to know better- add her to your list of faves.

  • @blkshepherd (cont.) and the Supremes just blew the doors off of the Hitsville studios. Their harmonies, I think, would impress and amaze many who are only familiar with their Motown hits. And yes, the years '64-'66 were fantastic for the group. Everything had an immediate, exciting sound. Slick and down-home at the same time. I really like your comments here blkshepherd!

  • @blkshepherd Ok, I know I'm taking a big departure here from Kim, but I like what you say about the Supremes' sound when Mary, Florence and Diana did 3-part harmony. Listening to the recently released cd, "The Supremes- There's A Place For Us" was a mesmorizing experience. I knew the girls were great at harmonizing, but this unreleased LP puts them in an amazing light. There are plenty of performances featuring the three of them harmonizing on standards- light years away from pop or soul...

  • @tomovox no problem at all..i immediately noticed the difference..but the backing on here is very close..and do a fine job..folks under rate mary and flo and diana when all Three sang in the back..but of course Florence's soprano was very very high as her voice was. and all three ooooewing together were like the sound of three canary birds..so sweet..mary flo and diana were at their best in 1964-1966 as far as 3part harmony. i wish diana did more backing with mary and flo. it was Supreme.

  • @blkshepherd Coolness! I'll take another listen- thanks for the clues to listen for!

  • @tomovox And to FURTHER back up my claim..Check Wiki I hear a Symphony ALBUM..it clearly list Mary and FLorence on All backing on that album..it makes No mention of the Andantes..but when you put in the Merry Christmas Album by the Supremes..it DOES say the Andantes provide backing along with Mary and Flo. who sang very little on the Christmas Lp. But as for this song..the Supremes Version Only has Mary and Flo. no Andantes..and that is why it sounds Different. The High Soprano is Absent on here

  • @tomovox NOT the same backing..Its a lot flatter and Not near as Sweet. Also take Note the the soprano is NOT as sweet as Mary and Flos harmony.. I had been listening to The Supremes version since it was released in 1966, Infact I especially Paid CLOSE attention to the Oooewwww oooooews..which to me Made this song. Something is quite different in the back ground on this version..that Something is Diana Mary and Flo. on the Supremes version Diana joins Mary and Flo in the back ground and Lead.

  • I LOVE MOTOWN!

  • Kim sang so many beautiful songs for Motown.
