Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2 cups cubed bread (compress, so there is a little more than 2 cups)
2 cups scalding milk (I used skim milk and it comes out just as good)
3/4 cup sugar (you can probably reduce this, as it was VERY sweet)
1 Tbsp. butter
1/4 tsp. salt
4 eggs (lightly beaten)
1 tsp. vanilla

Butter an 8 inch pan and pour in all the mixed ingredients. Place the 8 inch pan into a 9x13 pan that has 2 cups of water into it.

Cook at 350 degrees for one hour.

I reduced sugar to 1/2 cup, I believe, this time, and it was not as sweet. Very good, in fact. I may not have said it but this is the bread pudding that I grew up on. It's like comfort food at times.

  • Made this last night, after all. It was very delicious! I made a couple variations such as adding cinnamon and adding a little less egg and everyone loved it.

    Thank you. : )

  • @MilknHoneyx I'm happy to hear it ! :)))

  • I'm so glad I found this recipe, thank you! It's so simple! The last bread pudding I made was pretty egg-y and tasted nothing like the pudding my brother would rarely make. Now I need to choose to make either this or rice pudding today...

    Will post the results!

  • @MilknHoneyx I like this--it has a very custard-y flavor to me :) I hope you like it

  • yummy i love the older recipes

  • @brawyn777 me too :) They didn't seem to fear what was good or not good for you, just that it tasted good ;)

  • @changingmyself Thanks :)

  • I haven't had bread pudding in forever. My grandmother made it, my mother made it, and this looks like an old traditional recipe that could stir some nostalgia.

  • You have wonderful tutorials, thank you so much!

  • I just a made this and forgot the butter so I cut pieces and put it on topill reply the results.
