SCRIPT:
It's not your average soup kitchen but there's free food to be had at a certain cafe in Bristol, England.

Self-styled "freeconomist" Mark Boyle will be a regular here.

He's on a mission to survive for one year by trading his skills, living off the land, and finding freebies.

[Mark Boyle, 'Freeconomist']:
"Food comes from nature. Your apple tree doesn't ask for Barclaycard or Visa, it just gives. So, I'll be getting my food from foraging, growing it, from waste products, from cafes and restaurants, and from bartering my skills for little bits of pieces."

A big part of his extreme social experiment is to survive without spending - helping others, he hopes, see that most of our needs are merely wants.

[Mark Boyle, 'Freeconomist']:
"What I want to do is make people think about what they consume, how disconnected they are from what they consume and just actually think do I need as much as I consume right now?"

Pedal power will get him and his free veggies home - a trailer passed along the recycling chain that now boasts a wood-burning stove, solar panels and a composting toilet - all the comfort Boyle says he needs.

  • Mark Boyle ur the MAN!! You inspired me and the world of what you do! Greetings from Philippines.

  • I'd like to meet his girl friend and hear what she thinks of raising their potential kids this way. I'm not bashing the guy but how do you raise the children who go to school and want what other children have? Like store bought toys, bikes, iPods, DVDs, video games and trips to Disney World. Do do kids follow in daddy's hippy idealistic footsteps or rebel and go to business school when they grow up?

  • Mark could have dreads and could totally pull off being from Kingston. I hear that Bob Marley in the back too hahaha! I hope mark is raising up some herb too out there! LOVE

  • @dieeiervonsatan Wrong! You think that wall streets gonna make millions off one dude mopping floors for a drink, washing dishes for a feed and growing veggies? Ridiculous!! This dudes totally bucking the system becasue he isnt handing "credits" over for items eg the caravan, bike etc but exchanging goods for services WITHOUT it going through the system. Plus he's in England, so wall steets is going to make millions off one dude, hes not doing accounts 9-5 for a year pro bono.. use your brain...

  • this will never work. he is doing what wall street wants from us. work for free while they use our labour to make millions. what he is pursuing is the ideal tptb want

  • This guys is a badass.

  • This guy is cool but why is it that whenever you see someone like this, trying to live this way, you always have some cunts trying to play bongo drums, a spitty flute or looking like a fucking crusty and being all 'arty'? If I did this I would do it alone as that self righteous gang of 'posh kids turned out bad' would really piss me off.
