The Steve Stephenson Showband from Newmarket, Suffolk, around the late 50's early 60's, with a nice arrangement of My Gal Sal with Pete Webb doing the vocal and Marsh Bunnett playing some nice fill in passages on alto sax.
Information from Pete Webb.
Good to hear from you. Many thanks for connecting me to a record of mine 'My Gal Sal'. This was an arrangment written by Geoff Higginbottom (Trumpet) of Steve's showband. it was also the demo I did for my recording contract with EMI at Abbey Road Studios, London, sometime in early 1962. Steve's band, of course, did the backing. How did you get that quality recording?
However, I did get a contract and had a name change to Mark Tracey and ended up recording with the John Barry Orchestra. John wrote for me a song called 'Caravan of Lonely Men', which was also covered by the French popstar Johney Halliday. Google the song title with my M.Tracey name to hear it. Great pictures, too of Steve and the band at the NCO club at USAAF base at Lakenheath. The line up was Bob Hobbs on base Geoff Higginbottom, trumpet, Marshall Bunnet, alto sax, Tibor - can't remember his surname now, on tenor sax and Rene Jolly female vocals. The solo pic of me was taken at NCO club USAAF Mildenhall. Pencil and Paper was recorded at Decca as a 'B' side to Tony Bellin singing 'He's a Stranger in Town', on the 'A' side. Thanks for the memories - give us a call if I can be of help.
Kind regards
Pete Webb
