Brother Alban Petesch describes aspects of monastic community living at Assumption Abbey, a Benedictine community in Richardton, North Dakota. The monks live on the high prairie west of the Missouri River and support themselves by running a cow-calf operation and various small industries at the abbey. Some monks also work outside the abbey as parish priests, university professors, chaplains, and mission priests on Indian reservations. Brother Alban is the bread baker of the community. He is also the formation director, junior master, kitchen manager, sacristan, the master of ceremonies for the abbey, and in charge of liturgical assignments. The community numbers 60 monks, with a dependent priory in Bogota, Colombia.
