Album Review : The Moon & Antarctica by Modest Mouse

Released in 2000 on Epic records.

Easily my favorite Modest Mouse album.

Antarctica is a moody, reflective album. It's beginning to end good to great songs.

It has lots of lyrical themes on mortality and life and death and the universe and reincarnation and how we treat each other. It's all sung with a frankness and conviction that I love, with just the right amount of sad, negative attitude.

It's mostly a slow tempo to mid tempo indie rock listen. Most songs have a depressive, melancholy vibe. It's very articulate and well produced. It has a very honest and earnest feel that make it very enduring. It comes off being very sincere.

I recommend this to anybody who likes music.

it is indeed superb your descriptive words of this record were especially spot on , awesome work. i was just wandering could you do a fave and least fave vid for the melvins? and also do you have any pavement or fugazi albums id like to see your opinions on any of that.

I like this album a whole lot, I feel like Modest Mouse did what Beck did with Sea Change. They made it totally different, toning the overall loudness down and made it more acoustic and experimental. Although I still say Lonesome Crowded West is my favorite album by them, possibly of all time. I gotta do some Modest Mouse discog. reviews sometime, such a great band. Not to sound stuck-up, but its sad they went down in quality.

I actually thought good news was better than this one too. Tiny cities made of ashes is a good song but it annoys me that so many people consider it one of their best written songs. There are so, SO many better songs they've written. I think a lot of people likebit so much cause it has a funky edge to it and it makes it easier for people not used to modest mouse to jam to them.

I love this album too, but forgive me for suggesting that your description of it could pretty much apply to any M.M. album. I think you've captured more about who they are as a band than what this singular album represents. You throw out a lot of adjectives like "excellent" and "superb," but that says nothing about the details. For one thing, this album was intended to be a puzzle of sorts, with a hidden theme that the listener had to figure out. (That's all I'm going to say about that.)
