More than a year ago, the United Nations mandated a peacekeeping force for the violence-torn Darfur region of Sudan. Two and a half million internally displaced people, known as IDPs, remain in camps, under threat from government-sponsored forces. Undermanned and under resourced, the peacekeeping force is losing the trust of those it was meant to protect.

This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Darfur: Broken Promises" (http://bit.ly/Aa8Vcz).

  • It is a tragedy that the lessons of Rwanda - especially with regard to under-resourcing of peacekeeping operations and restrictive rules of engagement - have not been learned. Sudanese now pay the price. Thanks for this film, Pulitzer.

  • Thanks so much for this post. It really helps to shed some light on what is actually going on in Sudan, and why there is a warrant for Al-Bashir's arrest.

It's sad that he has ordered all aid personel out of the country.

This is a BAD time for all of this to be going on, given the condition of the global stage. Noone can afford another war right now, and Al-Bashir is not likely to go without a fight. It would be nice to see a peaceful resolution to this, but these things seldom go peacefully.

  • thank you for posting this, I really learned a lot about this issue...i can really feel the frustration of the UNAMID and the IDP... i feel so sad for them and my heart goes out to them. what does it take to bring these people peace??

  • My solution is teach this people how to fight & give them the equitment to do so. Until everyone in the Sudanese government is eliminated the peace will not come. Simple solution. Get rid of the evil people & peace will be there. Lets teach people how to fight for themselves.

  • the UN is a disgrace and the african union a joke. but it's no laughing matter for those that are the victims of this tragedy!!

  • People always bitch and moan that affluent countries don't do enough for the UN but with ridiculous rules of engagement like these, why would anybody volunteer to send their soldiers?
