This England, directed by David Macdonald in 1941, was an early morale boosting film from British National. With a stellar cast including John Clements, Constance Cummings and Emlyn Williams, it tells the story of an English village at different periods of history, showing how the villagers overcame their troubles and adversities in times of need.
Interesting too that this was the last film appearance by Roddy McDowall in a UK produced film before sailing to America to appear in How green was my valley, which paved the way to international stardom for him.
With a fine musical score by Richard Addinsell, "This England" may appear corny to modern day audiences, but at the time of its release it was intended to reassure Britons that they would again triumph as they always had in the past.
This film has quietly slipped into obscurity, like most of the films produced by British National. Unseen on UK tv for nearly 25 years, it has never been made available on either VHS tape or dvd. The British National film library contains many films that are worthy of re-appraisal, including Old Mother Riley comedies, musicals and dramas, many with a wartime setting. Hopefully more of these will eventually get a release because they form a key part of the UK's cinema heritage.
This film was originally protected by the copyright acts of 1911 and 1956. The copyright expired in the UK in 1991 and the film is presented here for research purposes only.

Not three bad. But I've never heard an American accent like that American journalist's before. Unless she's quick at picking up accents.

I'm so happy to have discovered this film today. Nice to see some favorite actors such as John Clements (of The Four Feathers, 1939), Roland Culver, and Emlyn Williams. Really appreciate your making this available to others. Now I'm going to explore Old Mother Riley for a while. Thanks again.
