From KETC, Living St. Louis looks back at the Forest Park Highlands—a popular destination for St. Louis families in the 1940s. Schools would plan all-day outings there to have picnics, ride the roller coasters and swim in the Highlands pool. The Highlands was destroyed by fire in 1963, but its many memories live on.
Forest Park Community College took away the best memory of my childhood. Burned for insurance and "higher education".

Beautifully done. So many cities across America had trolley parks back in the day. Most are gone, except for Kennywood, in Pittsburgh - still going strong. So sad.

I went to Shaw on Southwest and we paraded to the Highland. This is where I learned to swim. My older brother threw me in the deep end. I left st Louis in 1957 at the age of 13.

This video brought back so many precious memories, of our school picnic being held at the Highlands. I was only 7 or 8 when it burned down, but I remember the 2 or 3 years we got to go, and my uncle knew I was too short to be allowed on the comet, but he would sneak me on there as much as he could. Each family looked out for everyone elses families, these were the best days of my life. I loved the highlands, and am so proud to have been born and raised in St. Louis ( Dog Town) Missouri.

What wonderful memories this brought back. I grew up in St. Louis and a trip to The Highlands was just the supreme dream. When we'd drive by I'd wish I was there riding The Comet. It burned when I was still quite young and Chain of Rocks became the favored Park for school picnics. CoR was good, but nothing came close to The Highlands.

Thanks so much for this video. It brought back so many good memories. I will never forget when it burned as I was flying home sitting next to Jack Buck on leave from the Navy and we saw it from the air that hot summer day.
