@mailforbid1989 By all accounts, it looks like USMC played the whole IAR trick to get the replacement for their M4 carbines without entering the political hassle and budgetary debates.
@mailforbid1989 I never stated that this gun is a simple M16A2, the differences are pretty obvious between the LMG and the ""simple" version.
The HK IAR rifle, which, in fact, is no more that heavy-barreled version of their HK 416 automatic carbine (assault rifle), and it hardly looks like adequate replacement for a dedicated squad automatic weapon with belt feed and quick-change barrel.
@akibmatf speaking of this, seems like alot of the people here simply doesn't notices that this gun isn't only an A2 with fullly automatic capability. It fires with open bolt mechanism, plus a larger heat shield and thicker barrel to improve the performance when firing in longer brust. And the whole idea behind it was pretty similar to the modern US Marines' M27 IAR.
First you had the original vietnam m16. It had full auto. When these started to malfunction and jam we took what had been learned from the failures and made the a1. Trying to build further and make even more improvements the a2 was made. Full auto was removed for a three round burst feature here. The thinking being full auto is just a reckless waste of ammo and encourages "spray and pray." The updated a3 and the current a4 models have seen the full auto feature brought back however.
I think this came out about the same time as that 231 firing port weapon, never accepted by the US military because they had issues with burning the rifling out of it on a steady diet of full auto. Now the HK replacement for the SAW borrows a lot from the concept. I don't think these were all open bolt though.
Why is this Japanese where civilians can't even own firearms?

@GsxRaider I think that the A3 version is the full auto version of the A2 (which is an updated A1).
