Nicolas George Fournier, 18, a lifelong resident of Hog Island in West Swanton, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Nov. 17, 2007, as the result of a tragic automobile accident in Colchester.
Nick was the beloved son of Rene George and Cathy Lee (Cheney) Fournier, and the hero and idol of his younger brother Benjamin Rene Fournier. Born in St. Albans on June 3, 1989, he was baptized in the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary where he attended the religious education program, was a faithful altar server thru his freshman year in high school, and where he made his confirmation in 2005. As a student at Swanton Elementary School, Nick began what would become a lifelong passion for sports while playing on Little League teams coached by his father and Uncle Raymond. He went on to become a star of the Missisquoi Valley Union High School basketball and cross country teams and also of the baseball team as a fine pitcher. He loved watching the Boston Red Sox. Nick was also a star of MVU Skit Nite helping to lead the Class of 2007 to 1st place wins in his sophomore, junior and senior years.
During his junior year in high school, Nick began working as an apprentice for B and L Plumbing in Swanton and following his graduation in 2007, he started a full time position with them with the goal of receiving an associates degree and becoming a Master Plumber. He was a truly gifted craftsman who enjoyed working with his hands. He had already been accepted by the Plumbers Union of Burlington and was accumulating hours towards his degree.
Nick loved the outdoors and in addition to his many sports activities, enjoyed snowmobiling, snowboarding, fishing and, thanks to his brother, Ben, had just begun an interest in hunting. Nick was also one of the founding members of the Hog Island Outlaws which, despite its name, was dedicated to fun and good will.
Nick will be remembered by his family and all who were lucky enough to know him as someone who could bring joy into any situation with his beautiful smile and who was always willing and happy to lend a helping hand, putting every ounce of his effort into doing the very best job he could do whether it was in his work as a plumber, as a pitcher, mowing the lawn, as a brother, a friend or as a son helping out at his Dad's business even after a full days work of his own. More than anything though, Nick will be remembered forever as the Family Hugger who gave the greatest, warmest hugs to everyone, no matter who or why or where.

  • howd this kid die

  • Nick died tragically in a drunk driving accident. He and some of his closest friends were on their way home when a drunk driver came at them in the wrong direction on the interstate. The driver of Nick's vehicle did everything he could- and his driving probably saved everyone else in the car- but the drunk driver could not be avoided, and Nick lost his life.

    We all miss him perpetually.

  • This video will remain at the top of my Favorites as long as my channel exists, both because it is beautifully done, and because it is terribly significant. In some ways, I may feel more robbed than some do, because I knew this beaming ray of a young man less than a year, and in the relationship I have since developed with his brother Ben, and his family, I surely would have come to know him better. RIP, Nick.

  • RIP Nick

  • Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
