    Its just wondefull!

  • "If you are referring to the Title Track of ELECTRIC HEART, the name of the piece is "Water Jewel".

  • I knew Don Ellis & some of orchestra members.

I'm very honored because I was a close friend of Don Ellis's.

  • And it's a honor to hear from friends of Don Ellis as I never got that chance to meet him. John Vizzusi, Filmmaker

  • As a graduate student at USC in the mid-sixties, I was a faithful fan whenever the band played at Bonesville on Melrose. I was inspired to write my first big band chart -- Take Five -- and did it in seven eight. I asked him if he would look it over. He said he would and when he saw the first page, said "Oh yeah. I did the same chart -- in FOUR! Dontcha love it?

  • It was Miles who called the four valve trumpet weird after he played a few notes and experimented with the fourth valve. There were some sounds that were not mainstream from the Ellis big band but I don't know of any that could be called weird. Four string basses, three drummers, the tape loop solos Don played with himself were not weird, just not what you were used to hearing. For instance , having all the horns and reeds miked gave a different balance for the listener.

  • I was at the table next to Miles and his wife at Shelley's Manne Hole one Monday night when the Don Ellis band was performing. At a break, Don came down and chatted with Miles then handed him his quarter tone horn. Miles played a few notes and rather quickly, returned it with the comment "Weird man!"
