Cape Fear Breakers U17 Win Disney's Soccer Showcase (Boys) - 2011
Cape Fear Breakers Under 17 Elite team achieved a first in the clubs and Wilmington history this week when they won the Disney 2011 Disney Soccer Showcase.
Known as The Proving Ground, Disney's Soccer Showcase is the ultimate place for top clubs to be seen by hundreds of college coaches looking for great soccer talent. Rated #1 youth soccer tournament in the U.S. in a Soccer America survey, Disney's Soccer Showcase gives athletes a chance to shine on one of the biggest stages set for youth soccer in this country. The Cape Fear breakers certainly shone this week with victories over Southern California, New York and New Jersey opposition.
The week-long event culminated with a final match at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando Florida against the New Jersey Spartans. The teams earned the right to play each other by earning the most points in their respective groups.
The Breakers started the week with a 2-1 victory over the Southern California Fullerton Ranger with both the goals coming from Aaron Sparks, Jacksonville NC. The California team raised the tempo in the second half applying severe pressure on the Cape Fear Breakers, but a well organized defence and some acrobatic saves by goalkeeper Justin Savinon saw the Breakers through to victory and a crucial 3 Points.
