Steel City Junction Series: Blizzard At Pine Junction! Gary, IN. 12-8-09.

Here's the snow footage you've been waiting for! The trains were rolling and the snow was falling at Gary, Indiana's Pine Junction making for some great shooting. It seems like yesterday I was out here in 90 degree heat with the foliage still in bloom.

A Z-train on the CSX rolls through the snowy landscape going East. Note the US Marines semi trailer at the end of the clip!

The CSX TOFC train continues to move when Amtrak Capital Limited 29 comes by kicking up fresh powder with a surprise in slot two. It's been a while since I've seen one of these babies in motion!

Six axle EMD power was a nice break from the usual GP15Ts on the Y123. Shortly after the power passes, Q195 races by in a fury of snow.

Amtrak 350 was running about five minutes behind schedule but still put on a nice show as it sped East.

A CP trackage rights vehicle/manifest train.

C76992 is now the symbol of this empty coal train that traversed off the CSX to the CN City Line Connector. This train will head into Kirk Yard to have the power wyed, then will return West down the CN/EJ&E Main.

10:18AM-
The snow picks up again as T753, once known as the "Line Train," leaves Kirk Yard with EJ&E #663 leading long hood forward solo blast. It meets the C76992 empties heading into the yard.

10:30AM-
Catching EJ&E #663 solo with the Line Train going uphill was a must so I raced to 5th Avenue. As the train approached the crossing, I found out that CN ultimately neutered EJ&E #663 by replacing it's RS3L horn with a P5. It hasn't even been a year of aquisition yet, and already a lot of EJ&E heritage has dissapeared forever...

That was one LONG train for only one SD40-2. Must be down grade or it wouldn't be going that fast with one unit. Where are those unprotected steel coils going. Is there a tinning plant nearby where they make galvanized steel?

The unit leading was an SD38-2, and at that location, it's upgrade. CN gets as much as they can out of their units unfortunately. The coil train is going to ArcelorMittal in East Chicago's Indiana Harbor. You can see great portions of the facility and harbor in my Hick Tower/ CP502 videos.
