Arabesque (1966), is a spy drama directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' In The Rain 1952, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers 1954, Charade 1963 and Bedazzled 1967).

"Professor David Pollock (Gregory Peck) is an expert in ancient Arabic hieroglyphics. A Middle Eastern Prime Minister convinces Pollock to infiltrate the organization of a man named Beshraavi (Alan Badel), who is involved in a plot against the Prime Minister. The nature of the plot is believed to be found in a hieroglyphic code. Beshraavi's mistress, Yasmin Azir (Sophia Loren) is a mystery intertwined in the plot. Pollock needs her help, but when she repeatedly seems to double cross him in one escapade after another, he can't decide on whose side she is working. Ultimately working together, Pollock and Yasmin decipher the plot and set out to stop an assassination of the Prime Minister."

  • excellent movie....i saw it about 20 years back.... I think it was BETTER than several James Bond films!!!!

question: looks like Peter Sellers...which actor is in 0:32 and 2:15 ????

  • @Star1931 I presume your reffering to the actor Alan Badel 0:17 who played the villainous sunglasses-wearing Najim Beshraavi.

I'm a very Arabian Arab, I'm afraid, intones Mancunian Badel, in brownface.

  • @Star1931 ....or are you having a giraffe?

  • Absolutely brilliant. This movie had me on the edge of my seat as a schoolboy watching on tv. In later years it still stands up extremely well. There are plenty of moments that etch themselves in your mind (Peck and Loren in the shower for one).

Many thanks for posting this one and bringing back great memories of a great but oft forgot thriller. Class!

  • No problem.

Thanks again Eddie for the support.

  • Great work! Top 5 Mancini score for me. They don't have great melodies like this in main themes anymore.

  • Breakfast at Tiffiany's,Touch of Evil, Pink Panther, Charade, Hatari!, The Great Race, Peter Gunn, Experiment In Terror,The Party ....great period work.

    Thanks for your comment.
