As I often do when I am troubled I write, I compose... "You Don't have to Hide" is the result of me personally working through what had happened. I originally titled it, "Tyler's Song: You Don't Have to Hide," but then I began to discover that what was happening was more wide spread - and that Tyler was one of several young men who took their lives as a result of bullying and/or outting.
"You don't have to hide" is a parents perspective... it is a parent saying to their child, "I love you, just as you are (no pre-conditions or "I love you, but...") and that you will never have to hide who you are from me... because who you are is beautiful."
What happened to Tyler, Seth, Billy & Asher is not a commentary on their lives, it is a commentary about the world around them, revealing a deep and dark brutality and ugliness, a bigotry and prejudice that hides itself in "off color" or even at times in religion.
This song is a song of hope... hope that each one of us would be a place of refuge for people like Tyler, Seth, Billy and Asher. That they would have a safe place with us until the world changes. And that they would live to see that day...
Scott I think this is one of my favorites you have done! I feel so blessed to have known you all these years. You are such a very talented man! Tiffany Norton
