Researchers from the Intel lab in Pittsburgh have been working with physicians on a software tool to assist doctors in diagnosing skin cancer. It compares digital images of lesions against large medical databases. By simply taking a high resolution digital photo and uploading it into the DermFind software, algorithms compare the image itself to find similar cases that have already been diagnosed and treated. Having access to this large database of knowledge, which includes physician notes, treatments, analysis, etc. doctors will have more tools to use in the treatment of their patients.

Very exciting research from the folks at Intel. My wife has had several moles removed. While only minor surgery, it would be great if dermatologists had better tools for assessing moles without requiring a biopsy.
