Dr. Utkan Demirci, of Turkey, was an honorree of the 2009 JCI Ten Outstanding Young People of the World Program in the medical innovation category. The JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP) Program serves to formally recognize young people who excel in their chosen fields and exemplify the best attributes of the world's young people. By recognizing these young people, JCI encourages them and others to seek excellence and serve others.

An urgent need exists for low-cost tools to diagnose HIV in developing countries. Demirci, an assistant professor of medicine, created a disposable device that can sample blood for less than $1. This revolutionary tool to diagnose the disease has vast implications for the developing world as well as other aspects of medicine.
