- Er, yes, Peter.
- Mr President, has it been a good visit?
- Very satisfactory indeed. We got what we came for and our special relationship is still very special.
- Prime Minister?
- l love that word ''relationship''. Covers all manner of sins, doesn't it? l fear that this has become a bad relationship. A relationship based on the President taking what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter to, erm... Britain. We may be a small country but we're a great one, too. The country of Shakespeare, Churchill, the Beatles, Sean Connery, Harry Potter, David Beckham's right foot. David Beckham's left foot, come to that. And a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend. And since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward, l will be prepared to be much stronger. And the President should be prepared for that.
- Mr. President!

Bang on, mate. As a Brit I think you're right. Much of what this movie clip is channelling is a large stream of opinion that America has bossed us around over foreign policy, eg. with Blair being perceived as simply going along with Bush over Iraq etc. There's probably an element of truth in that. Despite my generally anti-nationalist leanings, even I feel a stir of patriotism within me, and it is certainly better form of nationalism that offered for example by the BNP and their racist cronies.

I love this film, and this scene makes me proud to be English, a feeling I don't experience too often these days.

if a real PM had made a speech like this, if Blair had an attitude like this, Britain would be a much bigger international player today. As it is we're just a spineless country which is a resource for America and Europe to suck dry as they need us. Hugh Grant for PM.

In the independent today
"Obama administration warns Britain to stay in the European Union
Philip H Gordon says Britain risks damaging its relationship with America and being sidelined in the international community if it leaves the EU"
as Hugh Says " a friend who bullies us is NO LONGER a friend" - hear hear!
