An 81 year old Clement Attlee (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 1945-1951) is interviewed by Robin Day during the BBC's 1964 election coverage.

The interview took place in the few minutes after Alec Douglas-Home had resigned as Prime Minister but before Harold Wilson had been appointed.

Wilson had an overall majority in the House of Commons of just four.

  • @RichardElden The Liberal Party is not and has never be a party of the far-left. The Liberal party is dominated by the Orange Bookers, a right-wing free-market oriented group. The parties reputation for leftism was a result of it's need to attract attention as a insignificant third party and attract disaffected Labour supporters, but has never been entirely accurate. The liberal tradition is complex, and you'd do well to understand that if you want to understand the coalition.

  • @RichardElden You disgust me.

  • @jed371 The voters in 1945 were fucking stupid.

  • Imagine how much better Britain would be if Atlee had never been elected? what a disaster

  • @MrRobertJameson. You're a fucking disaster who is destroying Youtube. Fucking tory troll.

  • Attlee was a fucking disaster who destroyed Britain.

  • @ktcm92 Inflation hasn't been as high as it was under Attlee for a long time now.

Attlee tried socialism and it was worth trying once. But, after devaluation, the coal crisis and inflation nearly hitting 10%, Britain was ready for a change in the 1950s. Attlee brought Keynesianism to Britain. The Tories made it work.

  • @prben2. Too true. Churchill was the great "war leader" but without Attlee the country would have fallen apart during the war. He is the only true deputy PM in Britain's history. His time as PM saved the country from anarchy. It's about bloody time Attlee got the recognition he deserves!

  • Good old Clem.
