i have two hydrostatic transmissions on my zero turn mower. one of which has gotten very weak. which parts typically go bad or need replacing when this happens? it has a swashplate and piston pump on the intake side and a piston pump that acts more like a motor on the output side. this is all new to me and would like to find out more. i am contemplating rebuilding it myself

@robhardison When a closed loop transmission fails - you should verify and overhaul both the pump and the motor. If you have no experience with closed loops - educate yourself about these sytems before attempting anything. My advice is - look for professional help. For many medium duty mowers it is actually cheaper to replace the transmission than to repair it.

What is the highest viscosity fluid axial piston pump can move?
Is it possible to use axial piston pump as a diesel transfer pump?
(using clutch as on/off control)
I understand axial piston is intend to pump R-134a and R-12.
With proper care and alteration.......is it possible to pump diesel fuel?

@dcpumd Optimal oil viscosity for an average axial piston pump lies in the range of 15-35 cSt. They do can work at higher or lower viscosities, but for short periods of time. In low pressure/speed range you could use an axial piston pump for diesel transfer - but you probably shouldn't, since there are much cheaper solutions, like diesel transfer vane pumps and such.... The refrigerat transfer piston pumps I've seen use inlet and outlet checks instead of a valve plate.

do the cylinders rotate ? I thought the cylinders remain fixed and the cam plate and valve plate rotate ....

@mitscientist Yes, the cylinder block rotates, the swashplate and the valve plate are fixed.
