Not to be confused with a gas station of the same name, chevrons are V-shaped dunes found around coastal areas all over the world, and some researchers have proposed that they were caused by giant tsunami waves caused by asteroids slamming into the oceans of the Earth thousands or even millions of years ago.

Texas A&M University researcher Robert Weiss and colleague Jody Bourgeois of the University of Washington believe they have eliminated this possibility. Their work is in the current issue of the journal "Geology," published by the Geological Society of America.
