Horowwitz plays the Rachmaninov 3rd Piano Concerto in Avery Fisher Hall, New York, 1978 with Zubin Mehta ( His last recording ever of this concerto and maybe the last time he played it. Horowitz was 75 years old in this recording!!!)

I love his relaxation. No pained expression. No rolling round in agony.

Cliburn and Weissenberg played the Ossia, both are pure magic, as are Gilels and Horowitz, and the man on top, Rach himself. Now we get bang bang and wang wang, talk about hitting rock-bottom ;)

I've had this discussion with others who feel as you do, and I simply disagree, as did Rachmaninoff himself, who played the cadenza Horowitz played, not the ossia. I find the ossia ponderous; I really don't care for it. The ossia, by the way, is the original. The cadenza Rachmaninoff and Horowitz played was written second, perhaps because Rachmaninoff wasn't satisfied with the original.

Well, certainly one of the best. And if you think he's the best, that's your privilege :-) I'd suggest, though, listening to some of the recordings of Rachmaninoff himself (his Schumann Carnaval is beyond belief), of Josef Lhevinne (there isn't much, but has anyone ever surpassed his Chopin g#-minor Etude? Or his Schulz-Evler Blue Danube?), and of Josef Hofmann (simply a phenomenon), if you haven't already done so. There are some others in the 20th century who were formidable, e.g., Busoni.

Only talking about the 3rd movement, the chords at 38:00-38:11 are simply to die for
