  • @blueduderanch Maybe there's some fascinating chemical explanation for having 13 metals, but as an artist my answer would be: because it looked good with the hexagon! :D There's 12 spokes, one for each face and vertex of the benzene. And then the gold rim is the 13th metal. To keep it nicely geometric and symmetrical you'd have to jump to perhaps 18 spokes (1 per vetex, 2 per face?) and maybe there were not enough relatively stable and safe metals to fill that out.
