This week I'm coming out of my shell and taking a look at the brand new addition to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, created in honor of the Green Team's 25th anniversary.

I also wish to point out that I sincerely do not mean any offense to the die-hard fans of the Classic Series when speaking in regards to those characters. While I do genuinely enjoy watching the Classic Turtles, I also fully acknowledge the incredibly comic bent that version is laced with, and get hearty laughs at how dumb it all seems.

Furthermore, as I said in the review, this movie just takes the already-existing humor from the Classic Universe and jacks it all the way up to FIFTEEN!!!

To help better explain, here's the "Fridge Brilliance" entry from the TV Trope's website's article on the film...

"The supposed exaggerated cowardice of the 1987 Turtles actually makes sense, given their awareness of the fourth wall- they, on various occasions, knew they were in "episodes", and even mentioned that they were the show's title. The '87 Turtles were never afraid where they came from because they were the main characters of the show, they knew they would live. Now in Turtles Forever, they were outside of their show and comfort zone- and indeed could really be killed, due to S&P changes and etc.
Also worth noting is the exaggerated cartoonyness of the '87 world and characters. The original series was always cartoony, but the first seasons were actually fairly serious, only to Flanderize and become sillier and sillier as they show went on. Actually, the original show had at least a few episodes that were more zany than what happened in this movie."

Enjoy, and feel free to comment :)

  • I *highly* disagree with your 'review' and interpretation of the original 1987 TMNT being a JOKE.

  • @Sakurab If you don't like the review, that's fine. I got no beef with that. However, there's no denying that the 1987 TMNT series was - for the vast majority of its run - incredibly light-hearted and comedic to the point where one could barely take it seriously. It was, to quote Peter Laird himself, the complete opposite of the original comics: The books were mainly action with small doses of humor, while the 1987 toon ultimately became the reverse... (to be continued)

  • @ImpulseKid86 (continued from last post). Furthermore, as I mentioned in the text description for this video, I still get some degree of enjoyment out of the old cartoon since I grew up with it, but unlike numerous people out there on the Internet, I don't go treating the old cartoon as if it were the holy grail of the TMNT franchise. I understand and respect the fact that people won't always agree with each other, but is not the 80's anymore, and far better incarnations of TMNT have come along.

  • I watched this the other day and It made me sick to my stomach. The voices 1987 characters werent that close, Shredder sounded horrible, Krang too, beebop and rocksteady sound acceptable. But the one that sounds so bad is the 1987 Leo, he just sounds like a tool.I still feel they went out of thier way to embarras and make a joke out of the original series, they werent that goofy, and there is even a part when they act cowardly and basically look like bitches. I hated this movie with a passion.

  • @Ibl33dGr33n4Life As far as Dan Green's take on Classic Leo is concerned, if you go back and watch the very early episodes of the Classic series you'll hear that Cam Clarke's Leo voice is deep and heroic-sounding. I think that's what Dan was going for. Still, I understand where you're coming from, since voice actors CAN overplay their parts (Tom Kane's rendition of Yoda comes to mind. Yoda's manner of speech is a part of his character in the films, but he doesn't phrase EVERY sentence like that)

  • I love the 80s turtles the best and I thought they were portrayed just fine. That's all the show was - them kicking ass and making jokes about it the entire time. That's what they did here. Sure there was a scene or two that made them look "whimpy" but what happened in the end? It was the 80s characters that ultimately won the fight, perhaps a subtle way for the producers to remind us that despite the nonsense, the 80s characters will always be the best. :)

  • For my part, I felt that this movie's portrayal of the classic turtles WAS fairly accurate--the problem is that to an extent, I didn't want it to be. I say this because even though the old series was a joke for the majority of its run, the first season and to an extent, the second, had much better action and more serious problems than became the standard later--plus there were the intro and video games, with proper fighting. I wanted this show to RESTORE the old series to respectability.

  • i liked both series of tmnt but i'd lean more towards the classic series as i grew up with it and although i enjoyed turtles forever and found the comedy funny i think they went a little too far with ripping the old series it was funny the first few times but after awhile it was a bit much i still enjoy watching it but i'll always lean towards the classic series even though it was goofy in places i still enjoyed more than the modern take the modern series is good but the classic is a bit better

  • "It's like having FIVE Mikey's now!!!" I love you Raphael ;)

  • This had an excellent story, but like most are saying: the interpretation of the original characters were off. Even the goofy turtles would never run away from a fight in a cowardly manner. Shredder and Krang from the 80's were complete scrubbs, but they pretty much nailed bebop and rocksteady. And the 80's Leonardo was a complete assclown. Probably the most important point was the varying degrees of seriousness between the three groups. The 03 turtles were the happy medium.

  • @cnh2132 I disagree with this comment though i respect your oppinion, I believe the 03 turtles were a better homage to the comics then the so called "classic" turtles from the 80's, many times in the comics the turtles had gotten into jams such as these, though 03 turtles are some of my faovrites i respect the 80's series, I prefer however, the 90's movie series

  • - who would call the shots between the two. I think he only had ONE scene where he sorta acted like the leader. Other than that they were OK, I love how the Mirage Turtles were so awesome that they even beat the 2K3 Turtles and scared the 2K3 Shredder. Too bad they couldn't get the original VAs. The others did a decent job, I think 80's Leo wouldn't have sounded as awkward if they kept him more in character. I think hearing him act so goofy with the deeper first-two-seasons voice threw me off.

  • Awesome review as always IK86. Though I do agree the old TMNT were WAY too goofy. If you watch the old cartoon they were somewhat serious, the goofiness lied in the plots and situations they were thrown into, and sometimes they just had to roll their eyes and go with it. The worst offender was Leonardo since his whole shitck was being the serious one. There were episodes focused on the others trying to just make him chill out some. They kinda missed a chance of making both Leos clash between-

  • @cnh2132 Wasn't the original 87 series use the anime style as well?

  • This anniversary movie was actually very good. I had no expectations whatsoever from it.

Also, i have a different opinion from yours, IK86. I believe the 2003 Ninja Turtles are more of a joke than the 1987-1996 turtles. I may feel this way since i grew up with the classic tmnt, but that show brought tons of fun in it's days, while the 2003 version went in a too futuristic anime SF genre that really doesn't fit them.
