I always go for the domination or conquest victory as it is more interesting, but the first time I went for the space race victory I led a small outsider Japan mostly locked on 1 rather small island and I didn't feel like quitting. I lagged behind in research up until the end (although I closed the gap near the end) and NARROWLY and I do mean NARROWLY beat a far superior civilization to space victory. And then I saw this footage for the first time. I almost cried - best endgame ever :)
