Waiting to Begin Again (Chapter 45) (Marathon 3/7)

I immediately went to her as she collapsed down on the couch and put her head in her hands. I sat next to her. "Okay, it's okay," I said as soothingly as possible, pulling her up so I could hug her. "Listen, from what I know and my experience if he didn't make it pretty clear that he wants to break up, he hasn't done it yet. And, besides, that's not any kind of break up line I've ever heard of, so don't worry about it already having happened. As far as his acting differently goes, maybe he's just having a rough time with this and he doesn't know how to express it." I had no idea why I was making excuses for this kid. I just saw how much she cared about him, and I didn't have the heart to hurt her. Really I wanted to scream at her to dump the jerk, that she deserved better than him, that she deserved to be treated well, that she needed someone who would take good care of her, protect her from trouble, not get her in more, someone like me.
"You really think so?" she asked lifting her tear stained face from my chest to look at me.
"Well, I don't know anything for sure because I don't even know him. But it's possible. And if not then it's his loss and he's an idiot for not appreciating what an amazing girl he has, okay? And if doesn't appreciate you, then he doesn't deserve you, and one day you will find a guy who will appreciate you and will treat you the way you should be treated, okay?"
"You really think there are guys like that out there who would wanna date me?"
I wanted to say that there was one sitting right next to her, that there were 2 guys like that because I knew that even if she ended up with Nick, he'd treat her right. But instead I just said, "They're closer than you might think."
"Thank you Kevin," she said, hugging me again and burring her face into my chest.
"Nothing to thank me for." I wrapped my arms around her and suppressed a sigh. I couldn't give up, could I?

{Nick's P.O.V.}
We had just gotten to Edmonton. We had had a day off, and since we were flying, we got to stay in Vancouver another day. However, Hayley had obviously spent the night on the bus since she traveled with the crew and the band. My family got to the arena an hour or so before sound check. Of course, the first thing I wanted to do was go find Hayley, so I was walking around, looking for her. Her dad was setting up, but he said Hayley wasn't feeling well, so she was resting. Of course, in order to find her, I just needed to listen for music. I heard yet another new song coming from a dressing room.
