Arranging the options in a 2D grid is a good idea, as it saves quite some space. I'm currently working on a similar construction; a "snap in"-2D grid - as in your example, pistons can be moved using 3way-switches, but they will kinda snap in whenever they reach a new cell. This should make aiming a bit easier. There's just the idea and a few partial experiments for now; I might upload a vid of when it's done, though. Keep it up, it's always good to have some fresh ideas around.
